The Portland State University Alumni Association, in partnership with departments across PSU, presents the third event of a 4-part speaker series designed to provide insights about some of Portland’s most topical and successful industries: Engineering, Data Analytics, Sustainability, and Athletic & Outdoor Retailers. PSU's Institute for Sustainable Solutions has prepared an incredible program bringing Portland's housing crisis to light.
Within in the Portland region, homeowners may build an Accessory dwelling units or ADUs are small homes – a detached building in a backyard, a converted garage, or an apartment within a home. During 2017, 500 ADUs were authorized in Portland – and many more are on the horizon.
ADUs are touted for their potential benefits: easing Portland’s housing crisis by creating new housing options for the young and for older folks who wish to down-size, helping families that need extra space for an aging family member or caregiver, and allowing homeowners threatened by gentrification to stay in their homes by providing a source of revenue from their property.
But ADUs have also been criticized for functioning primarily as expensive short-term rentals rather than adding to the housing supply.
Our panel will draw on recent research and collaborations by PSU and the Institute for Sustainable Solutions to explore whether and how ADUs can provide long-term equitable, sustainable, and affordable housing.
