ABOUT ABOUT

The PSU Alumni Association is proud to support Portland State alumnus Mitchell S. Jackson by offering discounted lower balcony level tickets to his reading at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on March 10- the Literary Arts and Multnomah County Library's 2015 Everybody Reads event!

The Everybody Reads 2015 selection is Mitchell S. Jackson’s The Residue Years. Having received praise from publications such as The New York Times, The Times of London and O, The Oprah Magazine, his novel was short-listed for The Center For Fiction’s 2013 Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize, a finalist for the 2014 PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Fiction, and a nominee for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for best fiction by a writer of African descent. Born in Oregon, Jackson recounts growing up in a neglected Portland neighborhood in this commanding autobiographical novel. The Residue Years touches on important issues from our city’s past that have continued to affect the present climate. With an MA in Writing from Portland State University and an MFA in Creative Writing from New York University, Mitchell has received fellowships from the Urban Artist Initiative and The Center For Fiction. He currently resides in Brooklyn, New York, where he teaches writing at New York University and is the literary editor of Dossier Journal. Celebrate the power of books in creating a stronger community. Through a shared reading experience we will discuss issues that matter, learn from each other, and promote greater understanding.
